What is Saving Our Heritage?
Saving Our Heritage, LLC (SOH) is a private video production company producing historical documentaries related to black American contribution and achievement to saving America during the Civil War, also known as the “War Between the States.”
What sets Saving Our Heritage apart from other black organizations?
Saving Our Heritage is unique in that it may well be the only black organization in the country whose mission is to produce historical black documentary for distribution to schools, churches, community centers, libraries, PBS stations, and museums.
How long has Saving Our Heritage been working on documentaries?
SOH has been working on docs since 2003.
What is the average time it takes to make an hour long documentary?
From concept to completion – the average movie or documentary takes from three to seven years to complete.
What is the biggest obstacle to completing a movie or documentary?
Time and Money. Creeping time and the shortage or lack of money is the single biggest obstacle to completing a movie or documentary.
Where will SOH distribute its first documentary project?
Our current plan is to ask one of the PBS distributors such as American Public Television (APT) to distribute our first documentary project to its PBS affiliates in the United States.
What is the title of your first documentary project?
The overall title of our current project is: “How Black Americans Saved the Union During the American Civil War”. We have selected several sub-titles for our first two-hour documentary project, but have not yet arrived at a firm choice.
Are there any current jobs or internship opportunities with Saving Our Heritage?
Currently, there are no job or internship opportunities with Saving Our Heritage. However, we suggest that you return to our website periodically in the event such opportunities become available.
Is Saving Our Heritage production open to future ideas for projects from people outside the production company?
For the foreseeable next four years, Saving Our Heritage has several production projects that will completely occupy its calendar. For legal reasons, our attorneys have cautioned Saving Our Heritage against accepting outside projects.
However, we have contemplated accepting photographs, documents, letters, and artifacts from families of black soldiers and other individuals who participated in the American Civil War with complete documented story about their black family history in order to preserve the soldier’s legacy.
Why is Saving Our Heritage commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War?
Besides the fact that thousands of black and white Americans fought as soldiers and sailors and sacrificed their lives in that war, John Brown’s desperate attack on the Federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry accompanied by his fanatical band of black and white followers on October 16-18, 1859 is thought by many to be the true start of the American Civil War. And so, many city, county, state, and federal agencies are joining in on the 150th celebration of the Civil War – some starting with the raid at Harper’s Ferry.
